Laila found her tribe. And oh, how they love one another. The Webster/Zgainer family from Alexandria, Virginia owned two male beagles, Ralphie and Mason. Little did they know what a perfect match they’d find in a female fighter named after a famous boxer. With the help of her big brothers, Laila quickly blossomed conquering her fears of walking on a leash and climbing the stairs. While still fearful of TV screens and bright lights, she has mustered up the courage to ride in the car, which is a necessity when one loves to hike as much as Laila.
In fact, this sweet girl with a noticeable scar on the top of her head from the glue of MRI wires has flourished so much she wanted to tell her own story about what makes her family so special.
BFP: How did you find your family?
Laila: My family showed up in a big back yard in Pennsylvania and opened my cage, allowing me to walk on grass for the first time. I wandered around the yard for a while before honing in on them melting their hearts with my sweet eyes. I knew I was going home with them.
BFP: How long were you in the lab?
Laila: I was in a lab for 5 years, my whole life up until my rescue. It was rough, but I feel lucky that I got to retire early. Now I hang out on Dog Beach, eat bones, walk in the woods, and sleep anytime I want.
BFP: Tell us about your adjustment after that big day in Pennsylvania
Laila: I got a gentle bath, a big bed, soft blankets, and lots of snuggles and I pretty much took to retirement right away. I am still a bit afraid of the TV….it’s so bright! But I get braver all the time. Sometimes my parents temp me to hang out around the TV with treats, but mostly they just turn the TV off to make sure I am happy and comfortable. I used to be afraid on walks. I would be excited, but then a loud noise or unfamiliar corner would scare me so I would just freeze. Walking with my brothers helped. They showed me that it’s actually pretty exciting to sniff the neighborhood every day. Now I walk without fear and even lead the way!
BFP: Tell us about your big brothers, Ralphie and Mason?
Laila: Ralphie is my age (we are both 5), but thinks he’s a big brother so I let him protect me and clean my ears. Old man Mason is technically my brother but he is really more of a grandpa. In dog years, I think he is 80 or something. He sleeps a lot but seems happy to have me around.
BFP: We know all BFP pups have nicknames. What are some of yours?
Laila: My mom likes to call me Laila Bug, or love bug. Papa calls me sweetie pie, but he really wanted to name me after another strong female from the cartoon Futurama, so sometimes he calls me Captain Turanga Leela, but we all agree that it doesn’t really roll off the tongue.
BFP: Do you have any tricks?
Laila: I can do a move called the Frankenstein. I stand up on my hind legs and can walk toward people with my arms out. I keep waiting for mom and dad to let me join a Thriller flash mob…my zombie arms are on point!
BFP: Ahem, how about worst habits?
Laila: Well, I took to home life overall, but sometimes I still like to potty indoors. Can you believe these people clean my pee and poop and they don’t even seem to mind? Talk about being puppy whipped.
BFP: Who is your best friend?
Laila: Ralphie likes to snuggle me, but I think my mom and dad are my best friends. Actually, they are kind of obsessed with me. Mom ran out of storage on her phone because she took so many pictures of me. I was like, hello, have you heard of the iCloud?
BFP: What about pet peeves?
Laila: Oh jeez, it’s when they don’t feed me at 5AM. They are so lazy in the mornings. I step on their face, and poke my nose into their eyes, but sometimes they still sleep in until 6 or 7!
BFP: Last question for you Laila. Any favorite things?
Laila: I love when mom and dad build me a pillow and blanket fort so I can hang out with them without seeing the stupid TV. They make me a little nook so I can snuggle them and not be bothered by the flashing lights.
As you can see, Laila found her people. And her people found Laila. And boy do they love each other hard.

Laila encontró su tribu. Y, ¡madre mía! ¡cómo se aman los unos a los otros!. La familia Webster / Zgainer de Alexandria, Virginia, tenía dos machos Beagle , Ralphie y Mason. No se imaginaban que encontrarían la combinación perfecta con una luchadora llamada en honor de la famosa boxeadora Laia Ali. Con la ayuda de sus hermanos mayores, Laila evoluciono rápidamente para vencer sus miedos a caminar con correa y subir escaleras. Aunque aún se asusta de las pantallas de televisión y las luces brillantes, ha reunido el coraje para viajar en el automóvil, lo cual es necesario cuando a uno le gusta hacer senderismo tanto como a Laila.
De hecho, esta dulce perrita con una gran cicatriz en la parte superior de su cabeza debido al pegamento de los cables para los MRI ha mejorado tanto que quería contar su propia historia sobre lo que hace que su familia sea tan especial.
BFP: ¿Cómo encontraste a tu familia?
Laila: Mi familia apareció en un gran patio trasero en Pensilvania y abrió mi jaula, me dejaron caminar sobre hierba por primera vez. Me moví por el patio un rato antes de acurrucarme con ellos y derretir sus corazones con mis dulces ojitos. Sabía que me iba a casa con ellos.
BFP: ¿Cuánto tiempo estuvo en el laboratorio?
Laila: Estuve en un laboratorio durante 5 años, toda mi vida hasta que fui rescatada. Fue duro, pero me siento afortunada de haberme jubilado tan temprano. Ahora puedo ir a la playa para perros, me dan huesos para comer, camino por el bosque y duermo cuando quiero.
BFP: Cuéntenos sobre su ajuste después de ese gran día en Pennsylvania
Laila: Me dieron un baño, una cama grande, mantas suaves y muchos cariñitos, y de repente decidí que podía jubilarme así. Todavía le tengo un poco de miedo al televisor … ¡es muy brillante! Sin embargo, cada vez me da menos miedo, a veces, mis padres me tientan con golosinas a pasar el rato alrededor del televisor, pero la mayoría de las veces lo apagan para asegurarse de que estoy feliz y cómoda. Solía tener miedo durante los paseos, al inicio iba muy contenta, pero cualquier ruido fuerte o un área desconocida hacían que me asustara, y me quedaba clavada sin moverme. Caminar con mis hermanos me ayudó, ellos enseñaron que en realidad es muy emocionante olfatear el vecindario todos los días. ¡Ahora camino sin miedo e incluso a veces lidero el grupo!
BFP: ¿Cuéntanos sobre tus hermanos mayores, Ralphie y Mason?
Laila: Ralphie tiene mi edad (los dos somos 5), pero cree que es un hermano mayor, así que dejo que me proteja y me limpie los oídos. El viejo Mason es técnicamente mi hermano, pero en realidad es más un abuelo. En años de perro, creo que tiene 80 o algo así. Él duerme mucho, pero parece que es feliz de tenerme cerca.
BFP: Sabemos que todos los cachorros BFP tienen apodos. ¿Cuáles son algunos de los suyos?
Laila: A mi mamá le gusta llamarme bichito. Papá me llama cariño, pero como realmente quería llamarme como a una de los protagonistas de la dibujos animados de Futurama, a veces me llama Turanga Leela, pero todos estamos de acuerdo en que realmente no es capaz de pronunciarlo
BFP: ¿Sabes algún truco?
Laila: Puedo hacer un movimiento llamado Frankenstein. Me levanto sobre mis patas traseras y puedo caminar hacia la gente con los brazos extendidos. Sigo esperando que mamá y papá me dejen unirme a un flash mob de Thriller … ¡mis brazos de zombi están preparados!
BFP: ejem, ¿Alguna mala costumbre?
Laila: Bueno, me hice rápidamente a la vida hogareña en general, pero a veces todavía voy al baño dentro de casa, ¡upps!. ¿Te creer que estos humanos personas limpian mi pis y caca y parece que no les importa?
BFP: ¿Quién es tu mejor amigo?
Laila: A Ralphie le gusta acurrucarme, pero creo que mi mamá y mi papá son mis mejores amigos. En realidad, están algo obsesionados conmigo. Mamá se quedó sin espacio en el teléfono porque tomó muchas fotos mías. Yo le decía, ¿Como? Pero bueno!¿No has oído hablar de iCloud?
BFP: ¿Qué te hacen tus humanos que no te gusta?
Laila: Oh cielos, es horrible cuando no me dan de comer a las 5 AM. Son muy vagos por las mañanas. Me siento en su cara y les pongo la nariz en los ojos, pero incluso así ¡A veces duermen hasta las 6 o 7 los muy huevones!
BFP: Última pregunta para ti Laila. ¿Alguna de tus cosas favoritas?
Laila: Me encanta cuando mamá y papá me colocan una almohada y una manta gorda para poder pasar el rato con ellos sin ver el estúpido televisor. Me hacen un pequeño rincón para poder acurrucarlos y que no me molesten las luces intermitentes.
Como puedes ver, Laila encontró a su gente, y su gente encontró a Laila. Y chico, se aman mucho, mucho.
