Rescue Beagles: A Life Away From The Lab
Many research labs across the country use animals for testing products such as make-up or medicines. For the past decade, advocates have pushed to get more of these animals — especially research dogs — adopted after they are no longer needed. Just a handful of states have policies in place. Illinois just recently joined that list. Lucy is a three-year-old beagle who grew up in a research laboratory. Last year, she was rescued by the California-based organization the Beagle Freedom Project who paired her up with Lauren and Scott Knudsen…
Pudding’s Story
Imagine living in the world under a blanket of darkness… scared of what maybe lurking all around you, uncertain of what lies ahead of each step you take, not knowing where you even are at times. Losing ones vision is one the greatest fears humans have. Now imagine that you are not only blind, but also stuck in a laboratory cage. Your whole world is perceived through sound and smell. The loud clanging of metal doors and cages, the echoes of voices bouncing off cinderblock walls and cement floors, other…
Grace's Story
Oh, the suspense! Last week you met Bagel from the Grace and Pups rescue and this week we are thrilled to introduce the mother that gave birth to these pups rescued in June 2012. Live from Los Angeles, meet Grace! BFP: Welcome, little mama! Tell everyone how your family found you. Grace: One day my human mom saw a sweet beagle in the neighborhood and asked the other human about it. She learned all about Beagle Freedom Project and gave them a call. As they say. . .the rest is…
Paula’s Story
There is one in every rescue group. The dog that saw, heard, and physically felt too much. That special soul with a gentle psyche, so beautifully innocent and so very fragile. That one survivor in the group who is not enthusiastically bewildered by the exciting new concept of freedom, but instead shell-shocked and dazed. We remember their faces, like that of Abe, Raymond, and Lucia. On January 11th 2018, that dog was Paula. She is a Shepherd-Beagle mix and is only a year old. Ordinarily such a dog would…
Bagel's Story
Back to California we go this week to meet one of Grace’s five puppies born in June 2012 and rescued in August 2012. Meet 5 1/2 year-Norwalk, CA resident Bagel and find out the hilarious word her family uses to describe her. BFP: I love the name Bagel and your adorable picture with the cream cheese. Tell everyone how you got the name Bagel. Bagel: Doesn’t Bagel the Beagle just roll off the tongue? My mom and dad thought so…. BFP: Tell us about your adjustment after spending your first…

Year of the Dog!
1. What’s the story? Who, what, where, and why! The story is that: In September of 2017 our rescue friends at BeagleChina and their amazing volunteers managed to rescue over 25 beagles from experimentation from various laboratories throughout China. Most of these survivors were between the ages of 9 and 10 and suffering from serious health concerns. Over the course of the fall, BeagleChina and volunteers were able to find adopters for half of the dogs, primarily the younger and healthier beagles. The remaining dogs were moved to rescue centers…
Students take a stand for retired research animals
INDIANAPOLIS – Freezing temperatures, icy roads and a little snow couldn’t keep Eastwood Middle School students away from the Statehouse Monday morning to testify in favor of adoption of retired research animals. Senate Bill 16 would require universities and facilities across the state that use dogs or cats in experiments of any purpose to offer retired animals for adoption to the public or animal care facilities. The animals must be healthy and cannot have a significant medical diagnosis. The Eastwood sixth graders were joined by Jamie Archer of Illinois and…
Cayman's Story
We are taking a trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma this week to meet a five-year-old from the Las Vegas Lucky 9 rescue. Helping us ring in 2018, meet Cayman and read on to learn the unique way he got his name. BFP: Happy New Year, Cayman. Thanks for helping us kick off 2018 the weekly Where Are They Now series. Tell everyone how your family found you. Cayman: My family found Beagle Freedom through various beagle Facebook groups and heard about these special rescues. They signed up to foster or rescue…
I Love Lucy!
While many Beagle Freedom Project supporters learn about the organization through rescue videos, the Fricke family of Haddonfield, NJ, discovered BFP through one of the rescues himself. In July 2013, Alexander Hamilton, who goes by Hammy, left the laboratory where he spent the first four years of his life and was released as part of BFP’s DC7 group. The Fricke family’s longtime friend, Melanie, brought Hammy back to her home in Washington, DC, and begin fostering him. Just five days later, 10-year-old Lucy and her mom Rachel drove to DC…
